Playing with Purpose: Engaging Learners in Game Play through a Check, Connect, Reflect Approach
The Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model enables students to explore their understanding of game-like situations and the tactical decisions they will have to make within game play. But one must remember that the learner is at the heart of the TGfU model. Educators who design situated learning experiences to meet cognitive and physical learning as well as students' personal and social connectedness to the game experience a more active learning environment.
This active workshop will explore British Columbia, Canada’s newly redesigned education curriculum and the positive correlation and applications of TGfU games model that can be practically implemented at all three levels of physical education learning, (elementary, secondary, and post-secondary). By developing a, “know, do, understand” model of teaching, students learn three main conceptual competencies to guide their learning in the physical education environment, communication, thinking and personal and social learning. The three levels of core competencies as stated by the BC Curriculum (2015) are as follows:
Physical and cognitive learning. Through students’ competency as thinkers, concepts and content can transform a new understanding.
Social Learning. The set of abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences and ideas, to explore the world around them.
Personal Learning. The abilities students need to thrive as individuals to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.
Through active participation in invasion game play as well as discussion of student-centered research and educational experiences, this practical workshop will highlight TGfU as a vehicle to support games learning at the different levels of education as they relate to: elementary education, secondary education and teacher education.

Further information for abstract/workshop submissions

To submit abstracts or workshops please use the "my conference" button to add your single abstract (oral or practical presentation or poster) or your workshop (with the possibility to invite additional speakers). For single abstracts you will be asked to enter a title, author(s) and a plain text of maximum 300 words. You can not upload formatted documents. To submit a thematic workshop/symposia you have two options: As a symposia/workshop organizer you can create a symposia/workshop by entering title and a describtion of the whole symposia/workshop. Than you can invite the individual contributors to submit their abstracts for their own or you collect all individual abstracts and submit them together.

New manuscript: RQES on the top 10 research questions on TGFU

We are happy to announce a newly published manuscript in RQES on the top 10 research questions on TGFU which is intended to give some guidance to contributors in shaping an exciting and interesting conference in Cologne 2016. The content of the manuscript was based on the overarching conference themes that were established by the organizing team of the Institute of Team/Racket Sport Research in close collaboration with the scientific board of the conference. We are grateful to all the contributors and want to thank them for their valuable contribution.
